Here’s how to create your own beautiful flower hat using paper, colouring pencils and glue for carnival, fancy dress party, school play or other special fun events. The flower we have chosen is a Poppy.
What you need
To make your Poppy Hat you will need:
- 7 Sheets of A4 white paper or coloured paper
- Colour pencils, crayons or markers
- A glue stick or sticky tape
- Scissors
- A Ruler
Step 1 Colour the sheets of paper
The first step is to colour your paper, 3 sheets in green and 4 sheets in red. You can shade this roughly and quickly like in the picture below, or you can use coloured paper instead. You can be as creative as you like. Once you have coloured your paper you need to cut, four even strips from each of the green sheets, as in the pictures below. You may need to use all 3 sheets of green paper. You can use a ruler to mark out where to cut so that you make your strips an equal size.
Step 2 Glue the cap shape of your hat
In the next stage you need to use the strips to form the cap base of the hat. First, join two strips together with your glue stick, to make a long strip, for the base of the hat. Measure it around your head and glue it to the size so it fits like in the picture.
Once you have your circular base, glue the strips to the top of the base. Place the first strip in the centre, this should be glued on the inside of the base and overlap the others slightly until your hat looks like the cap shape in the picture below.
Step 3- Make the Petals
You will need to cut four shapes from the red paper to create your petals. First, fold 1 sheet in half, place your hand on the folded side of the paper. Draw around your hand and cut the shape out keeping the paper folded. This first shape can be used as a template for making all your other petals the same shape. Fold the other sheets of red paper and use your cut petal template to draw round and make your petals.
Once you have done that cut the shapes out and open them. They will look like a heart shape. Stick your petals together to form one big shape like in the picture.
Step 4 - Middle of the flower
Look for something round that you can use to make a circle. A lid from a jam jar or a small cup could work. We used a roll of sticky tape. Make a circle by drawing round your object, then colour it black, and stick it onto the middle of the petals.
Step 5 – Adding the Petals to cap

Well done!! You now have a flower hat.
You can choose different colours and make your own petal shapes to create your own flower hat design. You can colour the petals on both sides. You can also add glitter, shiny paper or gems to make it twinkle.
