How to make a Chinese New Year Snake Headdress

What you need

Step 1 - Make the headband

1. Cut a sheet of A4 paper in half (horizontally) and glue together with a 2cm overlap to make a long strip like in the image below. This is the headband. Put the strip around your head to see if it fits. You may need to add another strip if it doesn’t fit. Keep it aside

This is the headband.

Put the headband around your head to see if it fits. You may need to add another strip if it doesn’t fit. Keep it aside.

Step 2-Making the headband headress base

  1. Take another sheet of A4 paper, turn the paper landscape and fold it in half. Mark 6cm on the bottom edge and using a ruler draw a line to the top corner so it looks like half a book.
  2. Using a ruler – mark 6cm along the bottom edge, then draw a straight line from that point to the top left corner. It should look like half a triangle. (see left image)

  3. At the top draw a curved line (see right image)

4. Cut along the lines you have drawn, then unfold the page. This is the headdress base (see image below). Keep it aside.

Step 3 - Decorating your headpiece.

  1. Draw/print, colour and cut cut a snake head and tongue.

  1. On a separate sheet (landscape) draw/print, colour, and cut out a snake’s body.

On more sheets of A4 paper draw some pointed petal flowers and some rounded flowers in 2 different sizes.

(We used 3 sheets of A4 paper to make 12 flowers).

7. Colour in your flowers and cut them out.

Step 4 -Assembling your headpiece

  1. Glue the headdress base (from step 2) to your headband (strip from step 1). Make sure the shorter straight side is glued onto the headband. (see image below)

9. Glue the snake’s body to your headdress base (see image below)

  1. Fold the top end of the snake’s tongue and stick it in position (see image below)

11.Glue the snake head onto the snake body in whichever position you like.

12. Get two big flowers and glue a smaller flower in the centre of each one.

Glue them to either side of the headband.

  1. Glue the rest of the flowers around the snake.

14. Following the outline of the snake body. Trim any of the white showing at the bottom of the headband.

15. Glue the yellow strip on the front, bottom edge of the headpiece and glue the flowers around the headband.
